The IMO introduced a global ban on the use of OTs in antifouling systems in 2001 due to their high toxicity. However, OTs have still been detected in the environment and pose a threat to the ecosystem. Several research groups have summarized the analytical methods, environmental fate, biochemistry, reproductive toxicity and mechanisms of actions of OTs. Here, we reviewed the developmental toxicity of OTs in various organisms such as sea urchin, ascidian, mussel, and fish. The differences in sensitivity to OT exposure exist not only in different species but also at different stages in the same species. Though some hypotheses have been proposed to explain the developmental toxicity of OTs, the solid evidences are greatly in need.

Organotin Compounds and the Environment
Organotin compound that have at least one Sn-C bond have wide commercial applications as PVC stabilizer, antifouling agent in paint and as agrochemicals. The general formula for organotin compounds is R4SnX4 - n where R is normally alkyl or aryl groups and X=Cl-, OH-, CH3COO- . If n=3, the compound has the highest toxicity, for example Et3SnOAC has LD 50 4mg/Kg ( rats ) and this is the m...

Organotin compounds result from the addition of organic moieties to inorganic tin. Thus, one or more tin-carbon bonds exist in each organotin molecule. The organo-tin compounds are ubiquitous in the environment. Organotin compounds have many uses, including those as fungicides and stabilizers in plastics, among others in industry. The widespread use of organotins as antifouling agents in boat pa...
متن کاملDirect determination of the organic extent of tin species in environmental samples by X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES)
Introduction Organotin compounds have been used since the 1960s as an effective antifouling agent in paints applied to ships and aquaculture nets in the marine environment. However, organotin compounds cause damage to nontarget marine organisms by leaching from the coating applied to boat hulls into the marine environment. For Sn analyses, speciation of the organotin compounds has been of great...
متن کاملThe synthesis of some organotin (IV) compounds in the melt- phase
The melt-phase synthesis of dioctyltin (IV) and triphenyltin (IV) benzoates were carried outusing stoichiometric amounts of benzoic acids and the corresponding organotin (IV) compounds. The reagents were ground together in a mortar and fed into a boiling glass tube. A cannula tubewas inserted into the boiling tube to discharge accumulated gaseous products. A syringe ensureda continuous flow of d...
متن کاملQuantitation and Identification of Organotin Compounds in Food, Water, and Textiles Using LC-MS/MS
Organotin compounds are chemicals composed of tin linked to hydrocarbons, used in industrial materials and various biocides and fungicides. As a result, organotin compounds can enter the environment through a number of channels, and can often be found in seawater, seafood, fruits and vegetables, and consumer goods. Due to the toxicity of these compounds, there is a need for analytical methods a...
